Looking at negative spaces

The exercise of looking at the negative spaces instead of the postive , which we usually do – is a good one. We have no set idea of what an empty space may look like and are therefore are more observant. It can help to draw a box around your figure so it is easier to relate the negative shapes to a fixed  edge.

At this time of the year, at least in the north,  the bare trees give us ample opportunity to observe shapes between the branches.

These sketchbook drawings are combined with collage – just for fun.
