The exercise of looking at the negative spaces instead of the postive , which we usually do – is a good one. We have no set idea of what an empty space may look like and are therefore are more observant. It can help to draw a box around your figure so it is easier to relate the negative shapes to a fixed edge.
At this time of the year, at least in the north, the bare trees give us ample opportunity to observe shapes between the branches.
